Emil
Nolde (1867 - 1956)
FRAU N. (Portrait of Ada Nolde, the artist's wife). 1911.
Scheifler-Mosel 165 iii; Ackley 64. Drypoint
with punch work on iron, 231 x 182 mm (9 1/8 x 7 3/16"), plus
full margins. Very fine, delicate impression of this extremely
rare print, apparently after the artist had carefully burnished
away most of the corrosion and punch work. Altogether there
were a total of about 24 impressions printed of this drypoint,
in all states.
"....Ada Nolde is seen full face in an even illumination.
Nolde's muse, emotional anchor and faithful helpmeet, the
Danish theater
student Ada Vilstrup, daughter of a Jutland preacher, is presented
here as a wonderful combination of strength and delicacy.
